Why do some muslims claim that the niqab is a command from God?

Religiously speaking Muslim women must show their faces when they pray and when going on pilgrimage to Mecca. Besides the niqa poses a threat to social security. So why do people still insist that it is good to cover your face when it clearly causes more harm than good?
