What is the logic behind not having gays serve in the military?

I am a straight male but I wouldn't even want to visit those backward, uncivilised, oppressive countries that ban gays serving in the military. There is no reason why gays cannot serve, except for the uncivilised/oppressive mindset of those who rule those backward countries.
